Tension Inside Kingfisher Nest
Kingfishers are solitary birds and pairs need to overcome a natural aversion to one another in order to breed.

A TENSE RELATIONSHIP
In this clip, the male is brooding five day old chicks. The female (identifiable by her orange lower bill) enters with a fish for the chicks. Watch the male recoil as she enters - the pair have a frosty relationship!
FILMING A SECRETIVE SPECIES
This year, I’ve been filming a kingfisher pair inside the nest. With a custom built nest chamber and state of the art cameras, I’ve been able to film the secret world of the kingfisher like never before. Read more about how I first built the nest here:
I am a British wildlife artist based in Thixendale, North Yorkshire, UK. I build ideal habitats to encourage wildlife into my garden and use nest cams to study their behaviour. These studies inform my paintings. I share the best of my video research on this channel for free. If you would like to support my work please consider a small donation here:
Or of course you may like to purchase my artwork which you will find on my website: . Many of the paintings are portraits of the creatures you watch here!
