Guinea pigs are herbivores so only eat plant matter. An ideal diet for guinea pigs includes hay or grass, guinea pig pellets, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Hay or grass should make up at least 80% of their food. They are high in fibre and really important to keep their teeth and digestive system healthy. In addition, guinea pigs need vitamin C to stay healthy. Good quality pellets include vitamin C but unfortunately as vitamin C breaks down quite quickly, they cannot be relied on to provide guinea pigs with the vitamin C they need. Fresh greens are a great source of vitamin C for guinea pigs. Green vegetables like broccoli, cabbage or spinach are suitable greens. In addition to the greens, limited amounts of high sugar fruit and vegetables like apples and carrots make a satisfying occasional treat for guinea pigs.
