WILDFIRES IN IBERA: SAN ALONSO ISLAND

Wildfires in Ibera are burning part of San Alonso Island in Ibera Park, where we work with the Government of Corrientes and the National Parks Administration to reintroduce the jaguar and the giant river otter, among other species. We are battling fires relentlessly, and our teams are ready to remove the animals in the pre-release pens. The presence of water around and inside the island would act as a barrier for fires, but prolonged droughts resulting from climate change have eroded these natural borders. Restoring Ibera is possible but will require time and the presence of this ecosystem’s keystone species and their crucial ecological roles to help recover Ibera’s natural splendor.
