The Royal Honeymoon: Princess Diana and Prince Charles Leave for Gibraltar (1981) | Royal History

On this day in 1981, ITN’s cameras travelled to Romsey to join hundreds of well-wishers in seeing the newly-wedded Prince and Princess of Wales off on their honeymoon. Following the wedding ceremony on Wednesday 29 July, Prince Charles and Princess Diana had spent three very private days at Broadlands near Romsey (where Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had also spent their wedding night). On 1 August, Charles and Diana departed for Southampton Airport along a route lined with members of the public. ITN’s Brent Sadler spoke to crowds waiting at the gates of Broadlands and provided live commentary as the couple left, while Alastair Stewart was on the tarmac at Southampton to give coverage as Charles and Diana boarded their flight to Gibraltar. #PrinceCharles #PrinceOfWales #Diana #PrincessDiana #DianaPrincessOfWales #PrincessOfWales #CharlesIII #KingCharlesIII #KingCharles #RoyalWedding #Honeymoon #Southampton #Romsey #RoyalFamily #RoyalHistory To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: To search the ITN Archive collection on Getty Images, follow the link below: 🎥 Subscribe to our YouTube channel (tap the bell icon and stay up to date with all the latest ITN Archive videos!) - @ITNArchive 🎥 Follow us on Twitter - 🎥 Like us on Facebook - 🎥 Check out our TikTok - @itnarchive1955
