He was imprisoned in 2003 by President Putin under charges of fraud and embezzlement, but the trial was plagued by accusations of political interference. Now resident in Switzerland, he established the Open Russia Foundation in 2001, which campaigns for reforms to the Russian political system, including a strong and just state, free and fair elections, and the rule of law.
