Canary Island Landslide Tsunami Simulation

A computer simulation shows what would happen if a 450-cubic-kilometer chunk of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma slid into the Atlantic Ocean. In the model by Stéphan T. Grilli et al., the resulting tsunami would devastate nearby islands, parts of European coastline and parts of African coastline. In about 7 to 8 hours, waves would reach the East Coast of the United States. The new simulations suggest the waves would be no taller than 10 to 15 feet -- a serious reduction from previous studies that suggested 80-foot-tall “mega tsunami“ waves would hit the eastern U.S. seaboard.
