Poppy was definitely pregnant. Just hours after I filmed her and wondered, she decided to go into labour. Alpacas, have very variable gestation, Poppy was on day 354. She has had one previous cria (baby alpaca).
Alpacas walk around to help them birth and Poppy is very used to me being near to her. The cria (baby alpaca) needs to hang head down to allow fluid to rain from the upper respiratory tract. Whilst the cria’s head and front legs are already out, the mum will often rest and is likely to be dilating further . To pull the baby is likely to risk injury to her and the cria, so long as the birth is progressing normally. This is a normal birth. I hope you find this video informative and educational.
