“IS JAPAN COOL? MATSURI You’ll find matsuri all over Japan, throughout the four seasons. Each matsuri is unique — in form, formality, faith, fun, and local culture. Some are solemn religious rituals; others test bravery, celebrate community, share happiness. Despite differences, matsuri are alike in one way. All reflect Japanese tradition, handed down over generations. ■ About “IS JAPAN COOL? MATSURI with KODO” Kodo Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble focuses on recreating Japanese traditional music today and actively performing throughout the world. Our project team commissioned Kodo to compose a completely new original song on the theme of Japanese matsuri. Kodo is based in Sadogashima Island, Niigata, a treasure trove of performing artsand has a profoundunderstanding of Japanese festive music from all over Japan.
