In Conversation | with Alys Tomlinson on Naples and Project Work

Alys Tomlinson is a freelance photographer whose work explores the relationship between people and place, themes of environment, belonging and identity. Using large-format film processing, Alys’ long-term, research-based projects help her build relationships and truly understand the people that she documents. Alys’ current project has taken her to Naples, where she is exploring the Neapolitan tradition of “La smorfia”; the art form that assigns numbers to different components of dreams. It is a tradition that can heavily influence the daily lives of the people of Naples. Alys discusses the project and how she interacts with the people she photographs. Whether used for stills photography or filmmaking, a camera offers the user a unique opportunity to tell a story.
