“Duane Michals: Portraits” presents a beautiful overview of more than a half-century of portrait photographs, many of iconic cultural figures, by one of today’s most innovative photographers.
For decades, Michals was a sought-after editorial photographer for leading magazines, capturing outstanding creative personalities of our era in pictures. This selection of portraits, many not previously published in book form, is accompanied by Michals’ observations and reminiscences. The book features images of performers such as Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Robin Williams, Tilda Swinton, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, John Cheever, René Magritte, and Balthus.
Duane Michals is a photographer widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text. His work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Odakyu Museum, Tokyo, the International Center of Photography, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, and the Scavi Scaligeri. He has been honored with a CAPS Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Art, the Foto España International Award, and an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Montserrat College of Art.
