Under a Different Sky

Under a Different Sky is the sister album to “These Lanterns of Dust“. I thought I would mention a little about the titles and the source of inspiration. Some of you might be familiar with an ancient song called the Lyke Wake Dirge. There are some excellent versions of this music on You Tube from bands like Pentangle, Steeleye Span and Medieval Baebes. This really is quite a haunting piece of music, check it out. If I remember I will put some links up. Anyway, several of my song titles come directly from the Lyke Wake Dirge. The word Lyke finds its way into modern usage usually spelt Lych or Lyche in such words as Lychgate, which you will find on some old churches. It is an in between place where the corpse rests between the world of the living and the graveyard of the dead. The fact that i found it so inspiring as a theme many years before I became a Christian, reveals that I was already moving toward an early concept of Tenebrae. The Dirge mentions Whinny Muir, that is the Moor of Thorns, across which the soul must travel after death, reappears in my own storyline as Etin Moor, a terrible place of many dangers. The Dirge tells of the last night a soul may remain safe before it exits into the darkness and its journey for weal or woe begins. Cheerful it is not!
