An overtly violent manifestation of Dan’s psyche - from self doubt and a negative inner dialog; to the darkest corners of his mind - Steven literally annoys, reprimands and beats-up Dan during his day-to-day; portraying the battles that we often wage within ourselves. At its core it’s Calvin and Hobbs for the depressed, post-pandemic millennial. I wanted the video to feel like an emotional cocktail of dark humor - hyper violent and yet tender and sincere. Playing Steven’s character against audience expectations, his resolute violence unravels as the video progresses, showing him as vulnerable and fallible and eventually evolving from villain to victim, in need of a hug.“ LYRICS: Meet me out by the fire escape It’s been 40 nights and 40 days And I’ve become uncertain in a cosmic way I chewed my fingers to the bone today Oh won’t you come around and come and meet me by the fire escape Untie this tied tongue tie What is it that I wanna say What is it that I really wanna say? What are the words I’ve been choking on, hopin’ someone will articulate? Oh no that’s some murky water Alright, we’re in the trenches now I don’t know when the party’s over All I know’s I’m getting out some how Oh, what a fever dream Meet me out by the fire escape Join the procession down the alleyway Our freedom’s a joke and we’ve got debts to pay How many waves until the levee breaks? Oh won’t you come around and meet me by the fire escape Untie these tied tongue ties What is it that we wanna say? What is it that we really wanna say? What are the truths we’ve been choking on, hoping someone will articulate? Oh no that’s some murky water Alright, we’re in the trenches now And I don’t know how the story ends But the pages just turn over then turn over again And redemption’s always out of sight and just around the bend And the outcome doesn’t match with what it is that I intend Like a stack of books that grows and gathers dust beside the be Or the disconnect between what people do and what they’ve said And I wanna read the news maybe without losing my head Oh, what a fever dream Meet me out by the fire escape It’s been 40 nights and 40 days And I’ve become uncertain in a cosmic way I chewed my fingers to the bone today
