Paris, FRANCE - 1989 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies’ Free Skate - Midori Ito of Japan landed the first triple Axel by a woman in World competition here, earning five for Technical Merit. She would win the Free Skate and end up moving from 3rd to win the Gold Medal.
