The collection of the four « Ogives » (church rib) constitutes the first medievial style pieces of Erik Satie, inspired by the study of Gregorian chant and by contemplating the church vaults, but without vocals and other ornaments, and with an austere melodic line, as well as cold tonic chords bashed with both hands.
For the first time, the measurement bars are deliberately omitted and by this action, Satie consumes the final break with the musical tradition. He voluntarily places himself in the marginal position which he will never leave.
