Chaff As Seen by Radar KLOT 2013-03-07

Radar imagery of chaff dispersal from Thursday evening. Chaff is a countermeasure used by the military and consists of very small pieces of metal, such as aluminum. It can appear in long and narrow paths due to the quick flying aircraft that release it. Below is a loop of composite reflectivity (left) and 0.5° correlation coefficient from 8 to 10 pm during Thursday evening. The correlation coefficient values are very low, indicating likely non-meteorological elements.
