Exploring Japan’s Largest Snow Festival Night Walk // 4K HDR
The Sapporo Snow Festival, known as “Sapporo Yuki Matsuri“ in Japanese, is one of Japan’s largest and most distinctive winter events. Held annually in February in Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido, this festival attracts over two million visitors from Japan and around the world. The event originally started in 1950 when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. It has since grown into a spectacular festival featuring hundreds of snow and ice sculptures of various sizes, transforming the city into a winter wonderland.
The festival spans about a week and is primarily held across three sites: Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsu Dome. Odori Park, the main site, is located in the heart of Sapporo and stretches for about 1.5 kilometers. It showcases large snow sculptures that often include replicas of famous buildings, characters from popular culture, and scenes that tell stories or convey messages. These sculptures are illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere. Susukino, Sapporo’s entertainment district, features ice sculptures that glitter among the neon lights of the area, with the Ice Sculpture Contest being a highlight. Tsu Dome is more family-oriented, offering snow slides, snow rafting, and the opportunity to see snow sculptures being made.
The Sapporo Snow Festival is not just about viewing sculptures; it offers a wide range of activities and experiences. Visitors can enjoy live music, traditional and international food stalls, and cultural events that showcase the heritage of Hokkaido and the Ainu, the indigenous people of the region. The festival is a testament to the creativity, community spirit, and resilience of the people of Hokkaido, embracing the harsh winter to create an event that is both awe-inspiring and inviting.
