What a great early song! One of the first introspective Lennon songs. A precursor to “Help!,“ another reflective autobiographical tune made peppy and commercial. But there’s hidden soul underneath. The J-160E really shines here. Not only with George’s stabby, sharp lead riffs, but John’s percussive, up-down strumming. It brings such life to this track. That “up-down“ strumming is the same pattern I used for John’s part on “Please Please Me,“ which is pretty clear in the Sullivan and D.C. performances. It’s another weird Lennon rhythm quirk, which I honestly really notice until this round of recordings! After studying the bootlegs and listening hard to John’s playing, it sounds like the same pattern to me here. Such a growl he achieved from the J-160E on this song. Amazing for an acoustic guitar!
