A Pro Democracy Activist Explains What Went Wrong in Myanmar

Although Myanmar transitioned to a democracy in 2011 after 50 years of brutal military regime, human rights violations continued as seen by the Rohingya crisis and several civil wars being fought within the nation. Control has always rested in the hands of a powerful few. Thinzar Shunlei Yi, a young pro democracy activist who has been speaking up against the military’s human rights abuses and its oppression of minorities in the state for over a decade, tells us why democracy in the state was always fragile, and how the military’s continuing oppression added to it.
