K-9 Helps San Diego Police Officers Take Stolen Vehicle Suspect into Custody

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * San Diego, California — On February 18, 2024, The victim parked his 1995 Chevrolet Silverado on 4500 40th Street. On February 20, 2024, the victim discovered his vehicle had been stolen. There was only one key for the vehicle, and it was in the victim’s possession. On February 23, 2024, the victim located the vehicle occupied by two subjects at 36th Street near Adams Avenue. The vehicle was moving, and the victim followed it while calling the police. In addition, the original license was taken off and an Arizona plate was on the vehicle. As the victim was on the phone with police, Officers arrived and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, 44-year-old Evan Baltsas failed to yield to the Officers and a pursuit ensued. Baltsas had a female passenger in the vehicle. After multiple traffic violations, Officers were able to “Stop Stick” the vehicle and it came to rest 4800 Savannah Street, San Diego. Baltsas fled from the vehicle and a Police Service Dog was released and bit Baltsas. During the bite by the Police Service Dog, Baltsas sustained an injury to his left ear and right shoulder. The passenger remained in the vehicle after Baltsas fled, and she was taken into custody without incident. She was later released at the scene. A record check of Baltsas showed he had two active felony warrants. Officers searched the black backpack that was in Baltsas’ possession. Inside the backpack, Officers located a small plastic baggie of a white crystallin substance in a small out pouch. A black expandable baton was also located in the backpack. During a search of the vehicle, Officers located two makeshift tools that they determined to be able to start the vehicle. He used the tools and successfully started the vehicle. The victim was notified and arrived at the scene to take custody of the vehicle. Baltsas was taken into custody and later transported to the hospital where he received medical treatment.
