🧬 ️ WHO HAVE ORIGINAL JEWISH DNA? 🧬 ️ ️by Hikaru Kitabayashi ️ Jewishness elicits fierce debate, and this concerns me because, through my mother, it appears that I have a certain number of German Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors. Anyway, Israel defines itself as the Jewish state, and being a Jew can happen either through conversion or through inheritance, which brings up the problem of who the first Jews were and who inherited their DNA. As most Judaistic religious sects define a Jew by inheritance as being the child of a Jewish mother, the DNA we must focus on is mitochondrial DNA which is inherited by both males and females from their mothers only. It is an extremely tiny portion of a person’s total DNA, but of importance because of the interpretation given by religious scholars to biblical texts. Strictly interpreted, this would imply that genetically pure Jews would all have a provable, female-line-only-descending, mitochondrial DNA descent from Abraham’s wife, Sarah. In fact, this is impossible. However, a relatively small number of “founding mothers“ of traditionally Judaic religious communities have been identified through extensive genetic testing. Nevertheless, the “founding mothers“ in question already number well over 20, with mitochondrial haplogroups ranging in origin to Sub-Saharan Africa, to India, to Anatolia, to various other parts of Europe and Asia. Neither Sarah nor Rebecca had daughters. Joseph married an Egyptian. Judah had children by Canaanites. Even the prophet and law-giver, Moses, was recorded as having married the daughter of a Midianite, a black woman. The wives of male-line ancestors of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, include three Canaanites, one Moabite, one Ammonite, and Athalia (the daughter of King Ahab and Jezebel, the Canaanite Phoenician princess of Tyre). The Babylonian conquest resulted in the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple of Solomon. A Persian king some years later gave the the rule of Jerusalem to his favorite eunuch, a Jew, who made it a law that the children of non-Jewish women could no longer be considered Jews. This, obviously, provided a strong impetus for popularizing the concept of conversion At any rate, the temple of Solomon was rebuilt and eventually the non-royal, non-high priestly, Hasmonean family, created a short-lived kingdom. They were great believers in forced conversion to Judaism. The heiress of the Hasmoneans became the chief wife of the Roman political client, King Herod the Great. His father was an Idumean and a Jewish convert, his mother an Arab. Herod completely rebuilt the second Temple on a grander scale than before. This Temple, the temple built by Herod, was completely demolished by the Romans, but the Temple Mount has been venerated and fought over by Christian crusaders, Arabs, Turks, British invaders, and Jews of dubious ancestry ever since. To reiterate, there are rather many Jewish founding mothers, coming from many different areas of the world. Statistically, this means there must now be many more with a right to consider themselves as Jews by birth who do not identify as Jews than there are those who do. The right of those now claiming the “Promised Land“ is indefensible. A better claim is needed to create a justifiable basis for the genocide of the Palestinians now being attempted.
