It was recorded in 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey and features the impeccable line up of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul chambers on bass, Kenny Drew on piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Lee Morgan on trumpet. It features mostly Coltrane originals (all of which have become standards), with the exception of a ballad treatment of the 1942 Jerome Kern/Johnny Mercer standard “I’m Old Fashioned“. This album contains a wealth of knowledge and is a source with limitless material to draw from to say the least. With all of the players present incredibly in form this session has gone on to define the sound of an era, serving as a corner stone in post-bop language.
