Longtime enemies Saudi Arabia and Syria recently announced that they have initiated negotiations aimed at ending hostilities between the two, with all conversations coordinated by Vladimir Putin and Russia. The news surprised most Western observers, but unquestionably will further serve to isolate the United States as a player in the Middle East.
