In 1905, Sergei M. Prokudin-Gorskii embarked on a project to systematically record in colour photographs, the great Russian Empire that would take him to the eve of the First World War.
He was outfitted with a specially equipped railroad-car darkroom provided by Tsar Nicholas II and in possession of two permits that granted him access to restricted areas and cooperation from the empire’s bureaucracy. In 1911, he arrived in the the ancient city of Samarkand. These are a selection of his photographs taken at that time.....
