The Extraordinary Gertrude Bell

She was an archaeologist, diplomat, linguist, writer, mountaineer and explorer - meet the extraordinary Gertrude Bell. In 1921 she advised Winston Churchill on the country that became Iraq, and helped to shape the Middle East after World War I. Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell was born into a wealthy family at Washington New Hall in what was then County Durham. The Extraordinary Gertrude Bell is a new exhibition drawn from the Gertrude Bell Archive at Newcastle University with significant loans from the British Museum, Imperial War Museum and others.
