Ninja the Wonder Boy was probably my favorite movie as a little kid, and I’ve always been miffed that the only version of it I can find nowadays are VHS rips of varying quality or old VHS tapes in terribly worn condition (not that I even OWN a VCR anymore anyway...).
So, I decided to import a DVD boxset of “Manga Sarutobi Sasuke“ (the original TV anime that the movie was stitched together from) and essentially remaster it from higher quality DVD footage.
Unfortunately my efforts were hamstrung by two minor sticking points: lack of a glitchless full stereo soundtrack and the DVD footage of episode 1 being fairly overexposed. So there are few spots where the audio may drop to mono as a result of me trying to patch together a full soundtrack from various sources (I’d say it is 95% stereo sound however), and some of the scenes may appear a bit bright/white (I tried to fix this where I could, but short of redrawing the frames there wasn’t much I could do with the overexposure), but overall I’m pretty pleased with the outcome. It’s certainly an improvement over VHS quality in any case.
I did take a little measure of creative liberty with the intro and outro credit sequences since they formerly just reused scenes from the movie. The entire movie only uses parts of like 7 episodes out of the 24, so I grabbed some previously unused scenes and popped those in for a little change. The movie content itself is 99% as it was originally released.
This is easily the largest and longest video editing project I’ve undertaken, and truly a labor of love. It took me a few dozen hours of work to get this all cobbled together, sourcing the footage from each episode and going literally frame by frame fixing random synchronization issues resulting from edits Kidpix made, not to mention all the hours of ripping media from DVD on top of that. It’s not perfect, but please enjoy.
“Ninja the Wonder Boy“ is a 1985 Kidpix/Jim Terry Productions release, made from parts of “Manga Sarutobi Sasuke“, a 1979/1980 anime series animated by Knack Co. Ltd.. Not sure if they are still the holders of either copyright, but in both cases, it’s certainly not me and I make no such claim. I am not monetizing/seeking profit from this video or my effort. This project and its subsequent upload to YouTube is essentially for the purpose of film restoration and public archival.
