Among the international left, there is a consensus that because Russia officially abandoned Communist ideology in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR, that Russia can somehow be characterized as ’imperialist’ or representing global capitalism - but nohting can be farther from the truth. The truth is that the end of the USSR left an ideological vacuum that was never filled. Russia’s geopolitical interests are absolutely synonymous with the socialistic material relations of production created under the USSR - from the basic infrastructure to way of living of the people of the various former Soviet territories who long for reunion in order to re-invigorate and electrify the decaying Soviet foundation that they still take for granted.
