In the first of our how-to videos, learn to dance ’Gathering Peascods’, an English country dance from Playford’s ’The Dancing Master’. Andrew Swaine, dance caller, introduces John Playford and his book ’The Dancing Master’, the very first collection of English country dances and their tunes. First published in 1651, the book was a great success, spanning 18 editions over 80 years and spawning numerous imitations throughout the 18th century. The music and dances continue to be loved by millions across the world, not least due to their inclusion in film and television, such as Bridgerton, Pride and Prejudice and Poldark.
