St Patrick’s Day 2021: Festivities from around the world

People across the globe celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, the Feast Day of the patron saint of Ireland, which took place on Wednesday — though celebrations looked differently than other years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chicago River was dyed green ahead of St. Patrick’s Day on March 13, in a surprise return to tradition amid the pandemic. Plus, various locations around Dublin, Ireland were glowing green, including the Samuel Beckett Bridge, the GPO Museum and the Custom House. Cities abroad were also to take part in the use of green lights as part of an initiative called “Global Greening.“ According to Tourism Ireland, 690 landmarks around the world were lighting up green. Also part of Global Greening was the Markree Castle lit up green in Sligo, Ireland. Millie Ryan performed on the castle grounds as green lights illuminated the iconic building. In Dublin, a swarm of 500 drones put on a spectacular aerial display in the sky to mark the holiday. And back to the United States: the White House observed St. Patrick’s Day by dyeing its North Lawn fountain green, while dancers were seen performing outside the Embassy of Ireland in Washington.
