ONLY AVAILABLE ON On the morning of Sept 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key, lawyer and amateur poet, was inspired by the “broad stripes and bright stars” of the United States of America’s flag waving defiantly and victoriously over Fort McHenry, following an attack by the British during the War of 1812. His poem, “Defense of Fort M’Henry”, was set to an existing popular melody of the time, and “The Star-Spangled Banner” was born. It quickly rose in popularity and gained more significance but was not yet recognized as the official US anthem. Congress finally declared “The Star-Spangled Banner” the anthem officially on March 3, 1931. Ninety years later, Zippo celebrates our national anthem with this elegant tribute to the rousing tune.
