Thousands turn up to banned pro-Palestine rally in Paris

Thousands of protesters joined a banned demonstration held in support of the Palestinian people at The Place de la République in the capital Paris on Thursday. Despite French police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd, the protest continued into the night. France’s interior minister ordered a ban on pro-Palestine demonstrations saying they were “likely to generate disturbances to public order“. These measures are believed to be driven by the fear of an escalation in tensions in France, which is home to Europe’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities.
