Expert Bomb Throwers Compete At Life Guards Sports Windsor (1916)

Windsor, Berkshire. Life Guards’ sports event at Windsor, including a bomb-throwers’ contest. Soldiers run across field, stop in a row, pick up ’bombs’ and throw them. Same from behind. Shot of sandbags arranged as the ’enemy trench’ with the grenades landing around and inside, judges watch (bombs are fake - look like bean bags). Horse coming over a jump, neatly clearing the bar, crowd in background. Another horse and rider approach, the horse balks at the last moment and skids into the jump, knocking off poles, rider turns back. They try again, this time the horse tries the jump but starts too soon & knocks off poles with rear legs. Horse finally clears the jump on third attempt. Horse comes charging across the field, the rider carrying a spear. Another follows in similar manner. Tug of war, team of men dressed in white seem to be winning. Modified WPA record.
