Al Hirt, ’None But The Lonely Heart’ (P. Tchaikovsky)

Interpreted by the great American trumpeter Al Hirt (1922-1999), this romance was composed by the russian Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). It’s based on a poem of the German writer Johann Goethe (1749-1832), ’Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship’: None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness Alone and parted Far from joy and gladness Heaven’s boundless arch I see Spread out above me Oh, what a distance drear to one Who loves me None but the lonely heart Can know my sadness Alone and parted Far from joy
