Taiwan Earthquake LIVE: Relief and Rescue Operations Underway After Massive Quake Rocks Taiwan A 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan on Wednesday (March 3, 2024), the strongest tremor to hit the island in at least 25 years, killing four people, injuring dozens and sparking a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines that was later lifted. At least 26 buildings have collapsed, more than half in Hualien, though in one of the worst damaged ones 22 people were rescued with only one missing, the fire department said. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that Japan stands ready to provide any assistance necessary to Taiwan following a massive earthquake. Taiwan is regularly rocked by earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. That’s where the world’s most active volcanoes lie. It’s also where most earthquakes happen as tectonic plates push against each other, causing sudden releases of energy that result in tremors. --- Taiwan Earth
