Anita Li: Why we need better racial representation in media leadership roles

On July 2, 2020, we hosted Breaking News: Canadian Media Fails to Represent, part of our Distant, Not Disengaged online conversation series, hosted in partnership with CityHive and the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, and our special guest partner this week, the SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This event focused on the need for better racial representation in Canadian news media and was moderated by Angela Sterritt of CBC Vancouver (). Anita Li is a media strategist and consultant, a journalism professor at CUNY and Centennial College, and a co-founder of the Canadian Journalists of Colour (), who recently developed a set of calls to action for Canadian media diversity () along with Nadia Stewart of the Canadian Association of Black Journalists. She discussed the business case, the civic case and the moral imperative for racial equity at all levels of journalism, from junior reporters to management.
