Externally, the 2103, although it resembled the Fiat 125, was completely redesigned: the front of the VAZ-2103 has a greater negative slope, and the lines of the front wings near the junction with the radiator grille and hood became noticeably sharper.
A very large number of chrome elements were used in the design of the body: moldings on the sides, thresholds and arches, radiator grille, bumpers, window trim, wheel caps.
Four twin headlights were inserted into the rectangular radiator lining, which occupies the entire width of the front, which provided a more uniform illumination of the road than the two headlights on the VAZ-2101. When the high beam is turned on, all headlights are lit, and when the low beam is turned on, only the outer ones are lit[7]. Due to the lack of production technology for such headlights in the Soviet industry before the launch of the VAZ-2106 in 1976, the FER plant in the GDR was engaged in their production, later the headlights were supplied by the Czechoslovak company Avtopal. Large two-tone lanterns appeared from behind[8].
Red lamps appeared on the ends of the front doors, which light up when the door is opened (if the outdoor lighting is on), warning drivers of other cars.
The interior of the VAZ-2103 had significant differences from the interior of the VAZ-2101: combined seat upholstery made of cloth and leatherette (a folding armrest appeared on the back sofa in the middle), door maps, steering wheel, a new torpedo had false inserts under a tree and a clock in the center, and a tachometer and a daily mileage meter appeared on the new dashboard on the speedometer, a radio receiver “Bylina A271“ was installed from the factory[7].
In addition to the new wheel stamps, new radial tires IYA-170 appeared, which were slightly wider and softer than the diagonal tires I-151 from VAZ-2101.
As a result, the VAZ-2103 was 80% identical to the VAZ-2101 — the differences were mainly in the hinged panels of the front and rear parts, as well as another interior[9].
As a result, the design of the VAZ-2103 turned out to be very modern (at the beginning of the 1970s) and was noticeably different from other Soviet cars.
