Mr Holmes, a sub-postmaster from Newcastle, said he had “absolutely no idea” why there was a shortage but suggested Horizon may be at fault. He said: “Unless it’s the Horizon that has let us down, there is no one who has stolen £40,000. I haven’t got it, it’s not in my bank account… I’ve spent too many years in the police force seeing things go wrong to start stealing money, I really do not know.” Mr Daily later said checks were made and that the postmaster’s concerns were “unfounded”.
