Thousands of protesters marched to the La Pampilla refinery operated by Repsol following an oil spill that has resulted in an ecological disaster, near Lima on Sunday. Some protesters scuffled with police outside the refinery after a signage was vandalised. “Repsol has a very great responsibility and what has happened with that accident is a crime, an ecocide against the entire natural system that we have,” explained local councillor Victor Advincula. Protesters marched with signs and banners demanding Spanish energy firm take responsibility for the damage caused to marine fauna and flora by the spill. Peru’s environmental agency OEFA said that about 1.7 million square metres of land and 1.2 million square metres of ocean had been affected by the spill. Repsol stated that efforts to clean up the spill would take place until the end of February. SOT, Victor Advi
