Hetherington looks at what goes into the day-to-day operations on America’s first highway, the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It begins with a short historical overview including what makes the Turnpike so unique. This is followed by an overview of those that work on and along the highway including: tollbooth operators, maintenance crews, state police and emergency response crews, tow trucks, fire fighters, tunnel operators, radio operators, and snow clearing crews. There is also an overview of some of the amenities offered such as service stations, picnic areas, and a tourist information. The film was shot by Eugene Visconti.
