Michigan became the 26th US State on January 26, 1837. This state is known for its extensive nature preserves, including the largest dedicated state forest system in the nation. Michigan is also a great place for water sports - it borders 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, and has more than 11,000 inland lakes and more than 36,000 miles of streams. Only Alaska has more shoreline.
