Visiting The Motherland Calls Statue - Didn’t Expect This...

The Soviet statue built to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle in human history, now called Volgograd, The Motherland Calls is built on Mamaev Kurgan, a small hill overlooking the city. Sometimes called the Mother Russia statue. The famous Changing of the Guard was incredible to see, upclose and personal, as they march directly in front of you. The horrors of WW2 and what the German Nazis unleashed on this city is never far from mind. Currently the biggest female statue in the world. Built over the mass graves of 34,500 soldiers, a small part of the over 1 or 2 million people killed in the battle (estimates vary). Let that number sink in. Visiting in the daytime and nighttime gives a different experience, especially seeing the Military Hall of Honor, with the flickering Eternal Flame. A UNESCO World Heritage site. #soviet #ww2 #stalingrad #volgograd #russia
