Bringing underwater messaging to smartphones

Researchers in the University of Washington’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering introduce AquaApp, the first software-only solution for underwater communication and networking on smartphones. AquaApp is an acoustic system that leverages the device’s built-in speaker and microphone to send and receive messages in a variety of underwater conditions without any special hardware required.
