Francesco Ermini Polacci’ Review:
“[...] what comes out of his hands is an explosion of sound“
[...] Daniil Trifonov: thirty years old, highly acclaimed piano star at an international level, technique of great polish, resolute attitude. He enters solid and impetuous in the first movement, his gaze very focused on that unique world of black and white keys. If necessary he also gets up from the bench, bends forward, uses strength on his forearms to give more body to the sound. Which is, it must be said, beautifully made. Bent over and thoughtful over the keyboard, Trifonov can suddenly sprint, and what comes out of his hands are avalanches of sounds . The first movement is entirely his, the second (the Adagio) flows through his fingers, clean and without poetry; the latter is the most congenial terrain for Trifonov to launch himself straight onto the path of the most sparkling virtuosity. Encore with the piano transcription of the famous chorale from Bach’s Cantata BWV 147: clear and without hesitation. A triumph, needless to say. [...]
Fulvio Venturi’s Review:
“[...] I was talking about Daniil Trifonov at the beginning. I have been following this thirty-year-old pianist since 2013, when with Gergiev and the London Symphony he presented in London a brilliant and obsolete piece by Glazunov, the concerto in A major n. 2 for piano and orchestra op. 100, which then went viral on listening channels.
Far from being essential, he is a highly communicative pianist, always concentrated, suffering and, at the same time, fresh and vital. Virtuosic and never dramatic. I would say that in Brahms’ writing Trifonov finds the exaltation of his qualities: rigor and passion, clarity and expressiveness. He achieved personal success.
Zubin Mehta directed illuminated by the light of the greats. We know that this music has been ingrained in him since his early days in Vienna, when he was a student of Hans Swarowsky. Over sixty years have passed since that period. But the clarity of the gesture last night was the same as then, like the ability to catalyze emotion, to excite the soul of sound. The orchestra dutifully followed him, giving those present something they will not forget.“
