Their home was a museum of concert posters, instruments, decades-long friendships, perfumes, plants, feathers, fur, and for me represented the luxuriousness of the fabulous lesbian music community of hippie San Francisco. ‘Can’t Eat Clout’ warns us against the temptation of working for exposure, of climbing too high, too fast, of selling your soul for a moment in the limelight. Our music video presents the opposite of clout chasing; it presents my safest space with all of my family and closest friends. It shows how rich life can be rooted in home, community and the simple and true pleasures of food, music, and dancing. There was limited staging for this project because what you see is my real life. You see me in the neighborhood I grew up in, amongst loved ones, doing what we love to do with each other. This is what saved me from the exploitative nature of an entertainment industry that tried to swallow me up and confuse my ethics and disposition. This is what keeps me grounded after months on the road, during my roll-out, at the end of a press cycle.
