One of the nicest examples of chaos in a simple gravitational system was studied by Sitnikov: This invovles placing a small mass balanced perfectly between two equal co-orbiting large masses. When these large masses are moving along circles, one gets periodic motion; however, for eccentric ellipses, one can see chaotic dynamics.
