La letra relata la historia de Caruso, el cual estaba enfermo de cáncer en la garganta y sabía que tenía los días contados pero eso no le impedía dar lecciones de canto a una joven de la cual estaba enamorado. Una noche de mucho calor no quiso renunciar a cantar para ella que lo miraba con admiración, así que, aún encontrándose mal, hizo llevar el piano a la terraza que daba al puerto y empezó a cantar una apasionada declaración de amor y sufrimiento. Su voz era potente y los pescadores, oyéndole, regresaron al puerto y se quedaron anclados bajo la terraza. Las luces de las barcas eran tantas que parecian estrellas o quizás las luces de los rascacielos de Nueva York. Caruso no perdió las fuerzas y siguió cantando sumergiéndose en los ojos de la muchacha apoyada al piano. Esa noche su estado empeoró. Dos días más tarde, el 2 de agosto de 1921, moría en Nápoles. The letter tells the story of Caruso, who was ill with throat cancer and knew that it had its days numbered, but that did not prevent him giving singing lessons to a young woman which was in love. A very hot night did not want to give up singing for her looking at him with admiration, so even being wrong, did carry the piano to the terrace which is attached to the port and began singing a passionate Declaration of love and suffering. His voice was powerful and the fishermen, hearing him, returned to port and stayed anchored under the terrace. The lights of the boats were so many that looked star or perhaps them lights of them skyscrapers of New York. Caruso did not lose the forces and continued singing to immerse yourself in the eyes of the girl supported at the piano. That night his State worsened. Two days later, on August 2, 1921, he died in Napoles.
