The oceans have been a powerful ally in combating global warming, absorbing nearly 93 percent of the carbon dioxide released by human actions since 1970. But a mix of higher temperatures and pollutants has created “dead zones“ - oxygen-depleted areas measuring tens of thousands of square kilometres, where plants or animals can’t survive.
