“Friday, 21 July Stage 19 leads the riders from Moirans-en-Montagne across the Jura to Poligny. The peloton will cover 173.2 kilometres - and almost 2,000 metres in altitude. Moirans-en-Montagne was already allowed to wave to the riders on a Tour stage in 2016. The stage led to Bern, where Peter Sagan struck. Poligny has never seen the Tour peloton up close. The route consists mainly of a breathtaking passage through the Jura mountains. Not because of the mountain peaks, because they are not on the route. The route consists of many gently ascending sections and two climbs. The Côte du Bois de Lionge (1.9 kilometres at 5.7%) in the first hour and the Côte d’Ivory (2.3 kilometres at 5.9%) almost 30 kilometres before the finish. The peloton has a dead straight stretch of 8 kilometres ahead of them in the finale to get the sprinters into position. Whoever leaves there needs an awfully big engine. And a lot of guts. But that’s unlikely to happen. Let’s look forward to a photo finish, there in Poligny....
