Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine could not survive for more than “a week” without Western military and financial aid. Putin also claimed that Ukraine had lost more than 90,000 troops since Kyiv’s counteroffensive against Russian forces began in June. Putin reiterated his position that Russia did not start the war in Ukraine. He said the conflict was not therefore imperial or territorial but about the global order, and that the West, which had lost its hegemonic power and always needed an enemy, had lost touch with reality. The Russian President also called Canada’s former parliament speaker an “idiot“ after the legislature celebrated a Ukrainian World War II veteran who had fought alongside the Nazis.
