(17 Dec 2013) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has transferred the long-lost diary of Alfred Rosenberg, a close confidant of Adolf Hitler, to the U.S. Holocaust Museum. The document was seized by ICE Homeland Security special agents in Wilmington, Del. following an extensive investigation.
The “Rosenberg Diary“ was written by Alfred Rosenberg, who was privy to much of the planning for the Nazi racial state, mass murder of the Jewish people and other ethnic groups, planning and conduct of World War II and the occupation of Russian territory.
“We spent 17 years looking for something that we suspected was in the United States, said Sara Bloomfield, the director of the Holocaust Museum. “This historical document from another continent and another century is now, we think, in its proper home,“ she said.
Rosenberg was a defendant in the Nuremberg Trials following World War II. He was found guilty of war crimes and hanged in 1946. Among the documents seized by Allied forces was the Rosenberg Diary. However, Robert Kempner, a prosecutor during the Nuremberg Trials removed the diary from U.S. government facilities and brought it with him when he moved to the U.S. Officials say he broke the law in doing so.
U.S. Attorney Charles Oberly participated in the case. However, he declined to provide details about whether anyone will be prosecuted. “We don’t make any comments regarding any investigations pending, but as of right now no charges have been filed, and I can’t make any comments about what may happen in the future,“ he said.
In November, 2012, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware and Homeland Security Investigation special agents received information from an art security specialist, who was working with the museum, regarding the search for the diary. Afterward, HSI special agents located and seized the diary after a warrant was issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.
