All right reserved to their respective owners. Only for watching, listening, and streaming. Video: scenes from the movie “Glory“ (1989) Music and lyrics: Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore was a famous bandleader before the war. He served during wartime as a bandmaster for the 22nd New York Regiment. Gilmore wrote this song (1863) under the name Louis Lambert. The melody was similar to several well known Irish folksongs. The song appealed to families on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line by offering hope that their sons and brothers and fathers would return safely from the combat. When Johnny comes marching home again Hurrah! Hurrah! We’ll give him a hearty welcome then Hurrah! Hurrah! The men will cheer and the boys will shout The ladies they will all turn out And we’ll all feel gay When Johnny comes marching home. The old church bell will peal with joy Hurrah! Hurrah! To welcome home our darling boy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
